Day 3 of owning a laptop. :)

Jeah, jeah! lol. M’ll get those two words. We like to make fun of “gangsta rap” and those two words are staples if you want to learn how to “gangsta rap”. Anyway, this is the third day of owning my laptop and can you tell I’m semi-delirious? My first night with the laptop was, well, how shall I put this delicately? I got about 3 hours of sleep. My second night was better because I was so tired that I had no choice. Tonight, I plan on getting back on my regular sleep schedule. The new-ness hasn’t worn off yet, but I’m already falling prey to some issues.

  1. Issue #1: Microsoft Outlook 2007 needs some serious ass-kicking. How hard is it to send a test message, automatically retrieve mail server settings or change an outlook data file without crashing? This is the third time I’ve had to force my laptop to shut down because Outlook 2007 just stopped working. It’s ridiculous because I’m now scared of adding email accounts because I have no time to save my data when this freezing happens.
  2. For some reason, I can’t assign PrtSc to my Snag It Screen Capture software. What the fudge? I’m not too bothered right now because I’ve found a workaround, but why oh why do things have to break? πŸ™
  3. About the fingerprint reader? Well, I’ve finally figured out the correct way to swipe my finger across. Right now, I can log into the PC by just swiping my index or thumb finger. Pretty cool. I still haven’t taught it how to log me into websites directly by swiping a finger.
  4. I called HP and I will be receiving the TV tuner soon at a discounted price. The sad part about it is that I had to pay full price, but I was told I would be refunded. You can bet your bottom dollar that I will be giving them a call on that.
  5. Microsoft Sync and Microsoft Mobile Device Center are not working. This is not a deal breaker because my Bluetooth works beautifully. I just can’t sync my device. This means I will continue backing up my phone’s data on my home desktop which has good old Active Sync. I’m just a little too tired to do the research involved to solve the problem. Who knew I would be longing for Active Sync given all the heartache I’ve gotten from it? lol.

That out of the way. I’d like to say that I absolutely love the Windows Aero experience. I mean, from the Windows Flip 3D feature to the way the thumbnails of folders actually show what’s inside the folder? Check the pictures out!

Those pictures were actually inside the folders. This is one of the nicer user interface changes. I did have to turn off User Access Control (or the famous UAC being mocked in the Apple vs. Windows adverts) because I got tired of confirming that I needed to change the simplest settings. I’ll take paranoid over lax any day though. The other change I think I’ll grow to love is the Windows Explorer interface. I am really growing to love the emphasis on visual stimulation via thumbnails, more descriptive icons, etc. It’s really nice.

Man, I have to say they did a really good job on Windows vista. I don’t even need have the utility programs I installed on my XP machine because Windows Vista does a thorough job of inspecting (or appearing to) and that is key for me. I am being really picky about what goes on this pc so I’m definitely looking to milk all I can from my laptop before having to venture out into the internet wilderness. Enjoy!

By the way, stay tuned to some audio or video of me goofing off using my webcam/mike and Microsoft OneNote 2007!

Highly honored

It’s funny how once the ball gets rolling, it doesn’t stop. See, after accepting one job offer, I recently got contacted again for another job interview for a research position. I turned down the invitation to interview for the job and the professor responded that he wasn’t surprised I got snapped up so quickly. Needless to say, I’m flattered and at the same time, wondrous. God has been amazing to me and my husband. I cannot thank him enough for opening doors for me at a time when lay-offs are happening left and right. I mean, I just feel so blessed right now and my husband’s family (and mine) are just so happy for me. My mother-in-law & I went to TJ Maxx to ‘celebrate’ with some shopping therapy while M & J had their midterm exam. lol. She totally spoils me and she got me some gorgeous dresses that bring “grown and sexy” to mind. I went to see my former boss and told him about the good news i.e. getting the job and they ribbed me about the job because it could possibly qualify as one of those Dirty Jobs, but I’m excited about the learning opportunity this presents. πŸ˜€

In tech news, I updated my WordPress version to 2.6 and I’m loving my Plugins management section. I mean, not having to manually activate my plugins? Genius! πŸ™‚ Upgrading was easy except for the part where my “Add Media” section of my TinyMCE editor disappeared! I mean, everything else seemed to work fine and the only thing I did different from all my other upgrades was use the gzipped version on the WordPress download site. Some plugins like Podpress and WP Polls caused my “Write Page” or “Write Post” screen to go nuts and these problems didn’t get resolved until I backed up my MySQL database and re-uploaded all the WordPress 2.6 files again. So, I’ve got all my plugins up and running & my “Add Media” screen is back. I’m also particularly excited that WordPress will support Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) because I’ve recently gotten the privacy-paranoia bee in my bonnet. Using an SSL means you cannot get snooped on by bad people. I’ve currently got The Onion Router (TOR) up and running on my PC and I use it for sensitve issues. πŸ™‚ WordPress is definitely the easiest content management system I have used and I have not had any major issues with it.

salmonspaghetti

Little B is doing really well and he is going to be one tall young man. He’s got an excellent gene pool so no worries. Mrs. JW and her hubby are also doing a fantastic job of teaming up and being the best parents they can be to the little smacker. πŸ™‚ That’s my pet name for B because he smacks when he eats. I just got done riding for about 15 miles and I had M take a short video of me. I’ll upload the video and update this post. He also prepared an absolutely delicious meal of spaghetti with sauteed salmon. Can you say yummy-licious? He is quite the cook, I tell you what!

Update: I’ve finally uploaded the video (thanks Google Video!) and here it is in all its glory:

UFC 79 amongst others

Matt and I visited a little tavern where we watched the, you guessed it, UFC match up of Chuck Liddell vs. Wandelei Silva, Matt Hughes vs Georges St-Pierre and some others. It wasn’t even a day before outlets like the Washington Post and the Grey Lady a.k.a. The New York Times were reporting on the outcomes. We got a great spot to sit and watch the pay-per-view event and we ate just appetizers. We both ordered veggie chili and got a pitcher of Miller Lite. πŸ™‚ Matt drank the bulk of it but I wasn’t complaining. I was initially nervous and downed the first half of my glass, but once the food came, I focused on that and let my guard down. We weren’t really hungry, but out of guilt, I order a raw veggie basket which served us perfectly because we really needed finger food. The undergrads aren’t back yet so it was a laidback atmosphere. M and I once went to Hooters to ‘eat’ just so we could watch a UFC fight once. It wasn’t so great because we were watching from a distance and the place was filled with representatives from some gym i.e. muscle-bound men & women. So, eating at this new place was definitely awesome and M tipped the waitress over 25% of our tab in the hopes that she’d remember him/us if we came around. I doubt she’d forget because there weren’t that many interracial couples visiting. πŸ™‚

Anyhow, I’ve changed my blog layout (duh) and I like it. However, I wish to heavens it cames with more options other than “change stories” etc. I shouldn’t moan and whine so much about free stuff. lol. Anyhow, I’m beginning to not like Youtube so much. Why? The low quality of videos there is really getting on my damned nerves. I was just trying to watch a music video, but there are so many results that’s it’s hard to find out the “official” release (some music companies have youtube channels that tend to have high quality videos). However, so many idiots have discovered that you can use some cheap tools to screen-capture videos and then, they repost these videos of supremely crappy quality hoping to derive traffic/fame/glory. Because of these idiots, I’m returning back to my roots i.e Yahoo Launch/Music. Granted, I’m sure I’ll get sick to my stomach again from the 30s adverts, but damn, the video quality is worth it. Say buh-bye to graininess and stupid Youtube account holders inserting plugs for their shit into FREE videos. *shakes head* Alright, let me get my hip-hop music fix out of my head before M comes home. lol.

Slightly frustrated

Okay, I would like to integrate my Gallery with WordPress and there’s a plugin for it. However, because I installed Gallery2 and WordPress on different databases, I’m essentially stuck. Grrrh. Well, thank God for Weird Al Yankovic at times like this! πŸ™‚ I’ve been a fan of his numerous parodies. One of my favorites is “I’ll Sue Ya” which is a none too subtle dig at the litigious nature of the American society. [myspace 1672853857]

Ciara and latest news

Holy smokes! Embedded video works on this thing. Awesome. I’m going to start things off with a cheeky video from Ciara called “Like A Boy”.

I absolutely love it and something for “thugs” or outright scoundrels to think about. In other news, My mom stayed behind after my dad left for Nigeria. She just returned on the 15th. She will be thoroughly missed by all who got to know her. In other news, I’m beginning to find that I’m in a catch-22 situation. It’s a resolvable issue but one that could turn out really well, partly mess or downright ugly. πŸ™‚ No alarms yet. I’ll have to wait till the end of a certain month to find out if the end is in sight. Kthxbye. πŸ™‚ That’s LOLCat speak, FYI.

Some videos are up!

Finally, my Gallery is accepting my video files! Head on over there and sign in to view the precious footage of my family.lol. I caught Daddy in the act of corrupting his mind with American TV (Judge Judy et. al) . Well, wish me luck. Life’s been more or less the same with my husband and I. It feels slightly surreal to think I’m married now, but I know that I’ve got a good man who respects my wishes just as I respect his. I don’t have a clue what to do about my website and right now, you could say I’m burned out w.r.t. to website building, etc. I want something manageable like Drupal or WordPress as well as flexible. For now, I’ll tinker with Drupal and Gallery and try to make both of them play nice. πŸ™‚
